An occasional chance in last summer holiday allowed me to be exposed to the field of history of the universe. During the class, I was taught that as numerous numbers of advanced technologies being invented, we are able to know more about what our cosmos is like, eg. there are between 100-200 billion galaxies in the observable universe. These huge numbers can easily make people feel insignificant in comparison and this depressed feeling is so common in our culture, in which indeed derives from the Newtonian assumption that in an incomprehensibly vast, cold universe we are, to quote the famous biologist Stephen Jay Gould, a “fortuitous cosmic afterthought.”
This dark and terrifying theory inspires me to do a 3D piece related to it but in a colorful way that one might feel positive after watching it. For my project, I aim to make it as joyful as possible, perhaps helping people to get rid of the negative feelings that the universe brings to us - although we are the tiny specks in the massive universe, we could just live with it since the universe itself is playful! Existence is never serious!
The plot of the story centers on a girl’s mind while she’s floating on the ocean and looking at the sky. Other cosmic objects are revealed in her eyes by the following hierarchy - star clusters, galaxies, cosmic web, and eventually a supermassive black hole. However, the so-called black hole becomes a colorful one that is not threatening anymore - it’s like a hole that leads people to the ultimate freedom.
